No progress............... from Exuberant Color

I didn't get around to sewing the floral star top, just not interested in doing it yesterday.  So here is a lot of miscellaneous.

This is the leftover block that didn't get used in the layout.  It will go into the orphan block box most likely.

I was cleaning off the dining room table so my birthday cards were gathered up.

My orange cactus is starting to bloom as most of the others are done.  I'm happy this one waited a while.

I baked Aunt Ethel's Kringlas last night.  I had to test them, over and ...

Playing with layouts.............. from Exuberant Color

Off and on throughout the day yesterday I came back to the design wall and moved a few blocks.  Here is the progress as I worked.

Still not quite there so I moved more blocks.

This is getting close and may be the last layout.  I'll look at it again this morning and see if I need to move anything.

Here are all three side by side so you can see better where the changes have been made.

30 blocks................ from Exuberant Color

One more block finished, bottom right corner.  I have decided 30 blocks is enough so now I just need to decide on a final layout.

But then I decided to make one more block to replace one in the layout above, one that had a very light background.

I took out the block at the beginning of the second row and put in the extra block.  There is still one more block with a very light background that I may decide to replace.  I won't take that block apart, I'll just make a new one.  That is why ...

Only 5 more stars............. from Exuberant Color

I intended to sew six more floral stars but realized one of the groups was missing dark triangles.  More cutting needed today.

I need light triangles for 5 more blocks and dark triangles for four.  I haven't pressed any of the blocks yet so I'll take care of that today too.

I'm getting really good at taking crooked photos.  I can't say that the blocks are straight on the wall though.  I like this top block.

This is the last of the five that were sewn.  I could just stop after I sew one more block ...

8 new floral stars........... from Exuberant Color

I found out my old computer in the basement, which I only used for embroidery designs, will still recognize my camera.  I tried taking photos with my smartphone but when I emailed them to myself they were dull and dark even though they looked great on the phone.  So on to yesterday's sewing: these 8 are the newest blocks.

I have 24 blocks now which would be 48" x 72" (close to my chosen size to make, 50" x 70").  I have 6 more blocks ready to sew which would then be 60" x 72".  I have 5 more ...

More stars.............. from Exuberant Color

I'm having troubles with my camera connecting with my computer but finally got a couple on here.  This is where I am after adding 5 new blocks.

This is the group of 5 new ones.  More made last night but no photo yet.  A little more cutting and I'll have more tomorrow.

Binding finished..................... from Exuberant Color

The binding was finished around 9 last night but I decided to wait until today to take its photo.

That gave me time to piece 2 more stars before I was done sewing for the evening.

Today I need to cut more light squares and triangles for the star blocks which will happen while I'm doing laundry.

The temperature was in the 20s again yesterday so the only time I was outside was to get my mail.  20s will continue all week except Wednesday when they are promising us a day in the mid to high 30s.  I think ...

A little sewing................ from Exuberant Color

I'm not a football fan but I turned on ABC to watch 10 p.m. news last night and there was still 2 minutes left in the game, Georgia vs Georgia Tech.  At 11 p.m. they were in their 8th OT.  So....I got more stitching time in because I had to see who won and it was Georgia.  Those guys must have been so tired...31 straight home game wins, score 44 - 42.  I scored half of a long side and half of a short side in stitching, so I have 1 1/2 sides left to ...

More stars and binding................. from Exuberant Color

Five more stars are added to the design wall.  These are 12" stars so 35 blocks would make a 60" x 84" quilt top.  I could stop at 24 blocks for a 48" x 72" quilt if I get bored making blocks.  There is always the option of a border too.  I have 5 more combinations ready to sew and I might get them done today.

I worked on the hand stitching of the binding on this one a couple times yesterday.  I have one short side and a half of a long side done.  I already have 2 finishes ...

Starting one quilt, finishing another.................. from Exuberant Color

The first two star blocks are made and I love them.  I didn't get any more pieces cut yesterday but I did pull some more light fabrics.

After cutting for 3 floral quilts I still have this much left.  None of this is Kaffe collective, it is mostly florals purchased from the 1990s to 2005.

This is a top view of the 2 big bins.  I need to sell a lot of it, probably for $5 a yard but need to decide how to group it and what size pieces to cut.  Any suggestions would be appreciated, especially if ...

A quilt top for November............. from Exuberant Color

This quilt top looks a little chaotic from a distance and very interesting close up.  I'm happy with the way the pieced border worked, giving a hint of border without any distraction from the center. Even with the border added it's still a small quilt at 53.5" x 65.5".

The next floral/nature quilt will be sawtooth stars.  Some will be matched fabrics like this one.

Others will be mixed groups of fabrics.  The one on the left has dark star points matching the center square and 2 different light fabrics.  The one on the right ...

Cleaning and organizing.............. from Exuberant Color

For the last few months I have spent the first week of each month doing clean up and organizing.  This group of fabric has been laying in a pile in my studio for over a year.  I had 2 leftover blocks from a quilt I made a few years ago and I really like the combination of gold, green and a little blue in them.  I will likely put this pile and the 2 blocks in a project box now in case I get motivated to actually make a quilt from them.  All fabrics are batiks.

I made a little ...

Sewn together and border audition............ from Exuberant Color

There were 2 pieces of Lotus Leaf Citrus color in my stash and it was just enough for this quilt top.  I could have cut one more square but the rest of it is smaller pieces.  One of the surprises to me was that the Lotus Leaf became a background and the stars are still the most prominent part of the design.  I thought they would blend together more.  I'm really happy with my choice.  The top is 45" x 62" so I'm planning on a border and I think the Shaggy print is good with it.  I ...

More auditions.............. from Exuberant Color

I filled in all of the spots with a couple more reds and lots of yellow/gold choices.  Some of those pieces were at least 2 yards so it was a challenge to get the pins to hold them up.  I found one more piece of the Lotus Leaf print so I put that one up in the top row.  (click to enlarge the photo)

I had tried the maple leaf with the LeMoyne star blocks before when I was trying to decide what I was going to do.  The cabbage print is interesting.

I only have a half yard ...

Auditioning................ from Exuberant Color

There were a couple fabrics I knew I wanted to try for the alternate blocks.  Top left is one, Enchanted.  Another was Dorothy, right end of 4th row.  At that point I could see I wanted to try some more choices.  I even wondered if it should be a variety of prints to fill the spaces instead of just one fabric.  I just kept pulling fabrics and pinned them all to the wall.

I don't have enough of this Enchanted if I choose it but it's still available to purchase.

When I added this one I really liked ...

# 3 finish for December 2023............ from Exuberant Color

I finally got the batik star quilt up on the double design wall.  The batting is Quilter's Dream cotton that I had a package of and it was thicker than I usually use so the quilt is heavy.  I finally resorted to using a chair to support the weight of it while I got the first 5 pins in the top edge and then it was pretty easy the rest of the way across.  It measures 73" x 99" now.  I forgot to take a photo with the backing showing so I'll add that photo later.

I took ...

Progress.......... from Exuberant Color

The seam was pressed and red bear print flannel backing was loaded on the longarm.  I also pressed the blue flannel for the other I Spy quilt and it is ready to have the seam sewn.  Maybe I can get the batting and top loaded and the machine threaded today.  Hopefully I will also be inspired to turn on the machine and do the quilting.

I had 3 sessions of hand sewing on the binding of the batik star quilt and now 3 sides are finished.  One long side to go.

Two readers alerted me to the name of the ...

Backing for one.......... from Exuberant Color

The batting is now cut for both I Spy Quilts.  I decided on Warm and Natural because it is flatter and I don't want much puff in the quilting on these quilts.

I also located backing fabric for I Spy 2.  The boys it is for are under 2 years of age so they should like this backing for a long time.

I started the binding on the batik star quilt a few inches before a corner and with just a little stitching time yesterday I managed to get a few inches past the next corner so one short ...

First 2 finishes for December 2023............ from Exuberant Color

Flannel log baby quilt is 38" square after finishing.  Hobbs 80/20 batting.

Backing and binding are Moda brushed fabric which is like flannel but more like the weight of regular quilting fabric.

Flannel 4" tumblers baby quilt is 39.5" square after finishing.  I cut the tumblers with my die cutter while cleaning up from making another flannel quilt last year.  It made for a fast quilt with pieces ready to use.  Hobbs 80/20 batting.

The backing and binding are the same as on the log quilt pictured above.

I got another quilt back from the longarm quilter ...

May 2023 monthly recap.................... from Exuberant Color

Two finishes again for May.  That makes 10 so far this year.  On the left is Kaffe fabric Rail Fence baby quilt, 38" x 52".  On the right Pink Twisted Ribbons, fabrics from many years of collected stash, 35" x 48".

Two new quilt tops, numbers 16 and 17 for the year so I'm still having too much fun making new quilt tops and dragging my feet quilting and finishing them.  On the left Pastel Diamonds is 49" x 72.5".  On the right Prints and Solids: Stars, 63" x 72".

For my own record, this top was finished ...
